Situation
A nonprofit organization was looking to develop their first strategic plan to determine what mission and purpose they should pursue in the future. The organization was at a pivotal time because it was transitioning from founders to a new executive director. They had experienced significant success in fulfilling their original mission and purpose and needed to determine their purpose and work for the future.
Action
Worked with the leadership team, board and a planning committee to articulate a 3-year vision and strategy for the organization. We involved management and staff to evaluate programs, skill sets, and capacity needed to execute on the vision. Our work was informed by stakeholder interviews and focus groups to gain understanding of the external environment and get feedback on current programs/services and identity gaps in offering. Facilitated sessions with board of directors and senior leadership to articulate priorities, goals and objectives, and themes to organize and implement a strategic vision. A strategic plan needs a clear implementation strategy, so we worked with the planning committee to identify obstacles to implementation, created an implementation plan for Year 1, and clarified board role, involvement and opportunities for board development.
Impact
The organization had an agreed upon vision and strategy for the future built on their prior success. The organization understood how their original purpose was a foundation to expand on that work in new ways. The strategic planning work informed the recruitment of new board members and the staff felt included and engaged in the process and work.
